• Genlock: To ensure that the source, display, camera and vision mixer are all in sync a system know as Genlock (generator locking) is employed. With this system all of the equipment receives a common synchronizing signal that trigger the start of each video frame

Scene1 : Curved Background Displays

Requirements

• Large curving surface
• When creating a curved screen we want to ensure that there are no variations in image performance across the screen
• If we create a curve from flat displays, known as faceting, we will see steps in the viewing angle performance of the display at wider viewing angles.
• This will be seen as a stepped fading of the image. Its much better to use a product that can create a smooth curve. The image will remain cohesive until the viewer has passed outside of the screens viewing cone
• Studios are not always very large and the creative teams are trying to get as much value out of the space as possible. A display technology that is slim and light will allow the studio to push the display closer to the outer walls and open up space in the centre of the studio
• Large LED screens can also produce a lot of heat. Its important that a screen be a fan-less design as any cooling fans would be audible in the programme
• A system that is heat efficient or takes the hot elements of the display and houses them outside the studio can be an advantage

Scene2 : Flat Background displays

Requirements

• image must be even with no variations between the modular elements of the display.
• As a background to a news or current affairs programme the screen could be showing interviews and pieces to camera that the presenters will interact to, its very important that these are displayed with correct colour so that they appear natural.
• With the shorted viewing distances we need smaller pixel pitch products to maintain an unpixelated, smooth image.
• A screen that is protected against signal or power failure can be a big advantage, reducing the chances of any visible issues interrupting the broadcast.

Scene3 : Inset Screens

Requirements

• These are screens that will be approached by the presenter in order to discuss a topic or carry out an interview with someone outside of the studio and then the program will cut back to the main shot.
• As the presenter can be very close to the screen it can be difficult to prevent moire effects, reducing the pixel pitch can help with this.
• We often need to produce high resolutions in relatively small spaces, so accessing a product range with smaller pixel pitch options can be helpful.
• As with all studio applications colour accuracy and system reliability are important.

Scene4 : Outside Broadcast

Taking broadcasting outdoors will need products with a wide feature set.

Requirements

• We will need features from the studio world, such as good colour accuracy and fast refresh and they will need to be combined with features that make the screen suitable for operation outdoors.
• Good weather protection is essential, with a high level of protection both to the front and rear of the display as it needs to be flexible in its installation.
• We need a simple and adaptable system that’s easy to install and doesn’t need complex structures. Mounting screens at the sides of stages is a common application that will require all of these features.
• Lightweight screens and larger cabinet sizes will also help.
• Viewing distances will generally be quite large, with products in the 4mm – 10mm range being common to give a smooth, high resolution image.
• At a pixel pitch of 6mm an HD image would be around 6.5m high and with 10mm, around 11m high. These pixel pitches allow for very large displays to be created, but still working with in standard HD video signals.
• This reduces the need for additional scaling and processing. Lots of additional processing will increase the signal latency, this is seen as a time delay between the actions on stage and their repetition on the display.
• A large delay can be distracting and can also lead to a noticeable loss of synchronization between the live audio and the video screens.

Scene5 : Live Event

Requirements

• For a live event such as a nationwide talent show we would need to build very large displays that operate as a theatrical back drop.
• With the large size and larger viewing distances we can use a larger pixel pitch cabinet.
• This application is very similar in its requirements to outside broadcast, the main differences being shorter viewing distances and no need for weather protection.
